Infrastructure

Douro, Tâmega e Sousa region occupies a central position in the North of Portugal, close to the major urban centres of Porto, Braga, Vila Real, Aveiro and Viseu, and just a short trip from Galicia, Spain. Its position of excellence, emphasised by its proximity to the road and railway network, makes Douro, Tâmega e Sousa a privileged location for living, visiting and investing.

 

Main road connections

 

  • A4: provides the main connection to Porto from Amarante, Marco de Canaveses and Penafiel.
  • A7:provides connection between Celorico de Basto and Guimarães/Braga.
  • A11: provides connection between Marco de Canaveses and Penafiel (A4 junction) and between Felgueiras (A7 junction) and Guimarães/Braga.
  • A42: connects Lousada (junction with A11) to Paços de Ferreira, making it the 2nd main route to Porto.

With the entry into force of the Três Rios card, travelling within the municipalities is facilitated. Thanks to this card, public bus connection within the municipalities, between the municipalities of Douro, Tâmega e Sousa and between those and the municipalities of the Porto Metropolitan Area and the Ave and Viseu Dão Lafões regions has become even easier and more affordable.

Main railway connections

 

Douro, Tâmega e Sousa region is served by the railway network via the Douro Line - 'Porto/Régua - Pocinho' Regional Line and the 'Marco de Canaveses' Porto Urban Line, which connects the municipalities in this sub-region with railway network - Amarante, Baião, Lousada, Marco de Canaveses and Penafiel - to Porto.

 

With the entry into force of the CIM Tâmega e Sousa card, travelling by public railway transport for those who live and/or work here is facilitated. Thanks to this pass, the connection between stations belonging to Tâmega e Sousa and stations in the Porto Metropolitan Area has become even easier and more affordable.

Main airport and port infrastructures 

 

Douro, Tâmega e Sousa region is less than an hour's trip from the main logistic infrastructures in the Norte region:

  • Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, one of the best airports in Europe (Airports Council International, 2018).
  • Porto de Leixões, the largest port in the Norte region, that also has a cruise terminal.
